Contemporary Wishes

Photographing Wishes is one of the highlights of a trip to Disney World for me, and I have also wanted to try the food at California Grill for many years. On our last trip, we managed to get a reservation, with the added bonus of being able to watch the fireworks from the rooftop terrace of The Contemporary resort.

The food is simply awesome, with some of the best sushi I have ever tasted, and the highest level of service to match. After we had eaten, we headed out onto the rooftop terrace to stake out the best spot to set up. Fortunately I managed to get the best spot right at the far end of the building, closest to the park, with amazing, unobstructed views.

A typically Disney finishing touch is that they synch the music to the show and play it through the speakers so you can enjoy the show just like you are in the park.

I tweaked a few settings as the show went along, but my favourite shot is this one, which I think was about 60 seconds long, using a neutral density filter to reduce the amount of light hitting the camera sensor.

It’s interesting to see just how far back many of the fireworks launch from – something you can’t really appreciate when you are in front of the castle.

With the exception of being dead centre on Main Street, I would say this is the best view of Wishes you can get – and you don’t have to fight your way through the crowds after the show!
