Castlefield Basin – Manchester

At long last it seems that spring is on its way and I had a photography walk around Manchester last weekend. The sun was shining and the sky was blue. Part of the day was spent in the Castlefield area, in particular the basin where the Bridgewater canal meets the Rochdale Canal.

There has been a lot of regeneration over recent years and the area is full of bars and bistros as well as apartment buildings. It is very close to Deansgate station and, although quiet during the early morning, the place is buzzing come late afternoon.

The canal basin is crossed by four large railway bridges, the oldest of which dates back to 1848. There is also a quite impressive foot bridge over the basin which was installed during the regeneration. This is known as Merchant’s bridge and is hung from steel arches, with a span of 40m.

Although not part of the immediate area, the latest building to the Manchester skyline – The Beetham Tower, can be seen in the distance behind the railway viaducts.

There is a great sense of old meets new here, and I have often wondered what stories the area could tell from its past.

There are lots of interesting places to explore around this area and the contrasts in textures and backdrops make it a great location for a pre-wedding / engagement photo session.

Here are some shots from the trip . . .

Manchester is a great place to wonder around with lost of unique features. Castlefield is just one small part of the city, and I will be heading back soon to explore more!
